CDC Radiation Emergencies: Proper use of Potassium Iodide (KI)

CDC Radiation Emergencies and proper use of Potassium Iodide (KI)

Here is some good info about Potassium Iodide and when and how to dose it properly. The important thing to remember is only to use it if absolutely necessary.  Click here .

This link describes the appropriate prevention including utilizing potassium iodide.

Dr. Sherri Tenpenny, a physician and International expert on iodine supplementation emphasizes "It is important to be prepared, but not overreact.  The best product for protection from radiation exposure is potassium iodide.  the iodide, which breaks down quickly and is quickly absorbed, was selected in 1978 by the US National Council on radiation Protection to be the best iodine blocking agent.  The FDA has called iodide the "most suitable" product for radiation protection.  The thyroid-and the body cannot absorb radioactive iodine if the tissues are saturated with healthy iodine."

Consumption of iodine containing foods- up to 3 mg/day through supplementation is reasonable..  The best way to be proactive is to start adding foods into your diet that are high in iodine.  Here is a list:
  • Kelp
  • Yogurt (low fat)
  • Cow's milk (2%)
  • Egg (whole, boiled)
  • Strawberries
  • Seaweed, including Kombu
  • Sardine and horse mackerel
In the event iodide supplementation is deemed necessary, Dr. Tenpenny further states "that it is best to take potassium iodide with selenium as it interacts uniquely with iodine.  It is a mineral with antioxidant properties to protect the thyroid against oxidative damage during the synthesis of thyroid hormones."

"Consuming large quantities of iodine should be done under the supervision of a physician as several potential side-effects could occur, especially if you are taking thyroid medication or have thyroid problems.  Taking large dosages of iodine should be reserved for extreme and confirmed exposures and not taken prophylactically."

We have potassium iodide coming to Johnson Compounding and Wellness Center over the next week.  The important things to remember is not to panic, and only use potassium iodide of there is a confirmed exposure risk in your immediate area.

The Dirty Dozen

Last night (Tuesday March 8th) I gave a lecture on digestion, elimination and detoxification.  A question was asked about what foods have the most pesticides.  Since many of us can not afford to go 100% organic every time we shop or eat, what should we do?

The solution is to focus on those foods that come with the heaviest burden of pesticides, additives and hormones.  According to the Environmental Working Group, consumers can reduce their pesticide exposure by 80% by avoiding the most contaminated fruits and vegetables and eating only the cleanest.  If consumers get their USDA-recommended 5 daily servings of fruits and veggies from the 15 most contaminated, they could consume and average of 10 pesticides a day.  Those who eat the 15 least contaminate3d conventionally grown produce ingest less than 2 pesticides daily.

EWG has been publishing guides to the "dirty dozen" of most pesticide contaminated foods since 1995, based on statistical analysis of testing conducted by the USDA and FDA.  The latest guide is now available.  The dirty dozen list only reflects measurable pesticide residues on the parts of the foods normally consumed (after being washed and peeled).

Below is the list of these 12 foods along with recommendations for foods other than fruits and vegetables that are best bought organic.
