Is fish oil dangerous?

There have been some scary stories about the dangers of fish oil in the news over the past weeks. Headlines included Fish Oil causes cancer. As with most stories reported, catchy headlines and only part of the story is provided.

Here are the10 PRODUCTS TESTED that had contaminats reported:
  • Nature Made cod liver oil and odorless fish oil; manufacturer Pharmavite LLC in Northridge
  • Twinlab Norwegian cod liver oil and emulsified Norwegian cod liver oil; manufactured in American Fork, Utah
  • Now Foods shark liver oil, double strength cod liver oil and salmon oil; manufactured in Bloomingdale, Ill.
  • Solgar 100 percent pure Norwegian shark liver oil complex and Norwegian cod liver oil; manufactured in Leonia, N.J.
  • GNC liquid Norwegian cod liver oil; manufactured in Pittsburgh

Fish oil is extracted from salt water fish. Our oceans are polluted and contain heavy metals, pcbs and other contaminants. This is where the problem arises. If we just extract the oil and encapsulate or bottle it, it probably will contain pollutants that can be harmful to us.

Many manufacturers and retailers strive for high quality in the products they make or sell. There are some whose goal is to have the largest bottle at the lowest price.

When purchasing fish oil or other nutritional supplements, knowing who you are buying it from, how they choose which products to sell, how the products are tested and who is making and testing the products are very important considerations.

The fish oil products sold at Johnson Compounding and Wellness are of the highest standards, batches tested for purity and lack of contaminants and are products we ourselves take and recommend to our families and friends.

We do not carry many brands of fish oil products due to the lack of testing and purity.

Fish oil contains EFAs (Essential Fatty Acids). This means they are essential to our life and health and we cannot make them, we must ingest them. The recommendations in the news to stop taking fish oil are dangerous. What they should have said was to stop taking inferior, poor quality fish oil.
